Overview:

In this unit study, we will be learning about Advent. We will be learning about how Advent marks the liturgical year of the Catholic Church. As well, how the Advent season is a time which we prepare our hearts and minds for the anniversary of Jesus' birth on Christmas day and Christ's second coming at the end of the time. The students will learn that Advent is a time of anticipation, hope, and renewal, and is observed by prayer, sacrifice, and good works.

Objectives:

The objectives of our unit are the following I CAN statements

Lesson One:

I can tell that the birth of Jesus was promised by God
I can take part in the Advent prayer service
I can tell why the Advent wreath and the Jesse Tree are symbols of Advent
I can share my thoughts and feelings with God through prayer

Lesson Two

I can tell how the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the Mother of Jesus
I can retell the story of the angel Gabriel's visit to Mary
I can tell how Mary said "yes" to God
I can take part in the Advent Prayer service
I can pray to Mary for help

Lesson Three

I can tell how Jesus is the light of the world
I can tell that Jesus loved the poor
I can role-play ways to help those in need
I can take part in the Advent prayer service

Lesson Four

I can use Bible stories to tell that Jesus is the Saviour God promised to send
I can retell the events of the nativity in my own words
I can identify the song of the angels as good news
I can take part in the Advent prayer service

Lesson Five

I can tell how the Holy Family and my family are similar and different
I can retell the story of the Three Wise Men
I can tell a story about Jesus with a picture
I can pray with others
I can pray in different ways

Please note each lesson takes about one week to teach completely. This unit will take approximately 5 to 6 weeks to complete
